CLASS OFFERING

Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga

Ashtanga Vinyasa consists of different series of asanas ranging in difficulty from primary to advanced. Novices are not taught the entire primary series immediately. Instead, they are led by the teacher through only some of the asanas; this allows novices to build a solid Ashtanga foundation safely and with confidence.

When a student has memorized everything taught to him/her and can do the sequence from memory, that student begins to practice the “Mysore style”.

Mysore is a city in south India, where Sri. K. Pattabhi Jois lived and taught Ashtanga Vinyasa. Although Ashtanga Vinyasa far predates Sri. Jois, the way Sri. Jois taught it remains popular to this day and is therefore named Mysore style or just simply Mysore.

Following the principles of Mysore, we demonstrate and explain the asanas to novice students, but once they have memorized the sequence we just watch, correct and guide. Once a student remembers and has mastered what we have taught, the next asana in the series is introduced and so on. It is a very individual and step-by-step method of practice, which is only possible in a small class setting. In a typical class, you’ll find only a few students and each one will be working on a different asana. The teacher will walk around, adjust, correct and encourage. We believe that Mysore is the most effective way to practice Ashtanga Vinyasa.
