My name is Dyan and I teach one Hatha (1) class at Body Buddy on Sunday mornings. I'm a New Zealander so naturally the class is mainly in English, but if a student looks confused I add some Chinese (I speak a little). I did my yoga teacher training at Body Buddy and am still a student here myself. It's a great yoga studio because the people are friendly yet laidback, and the atmosphere's very soothing and relaxing.
I'm really into yoga, but not naturally good at it—which probably makes me the world's most patient yoga instructor! My motto is; “Just take it easy.” On the other hand, my regular students are just the opposite and never want to “take it easy”. They push themselves to the max.
If I show them three variations of a pose, with one being the easiest and three being the most difficult, they'll all pick three even if it means grunting and toppling off the mat! So far, the only explanation I've come up with for this rather amusing phenomenon is that opposites attract!
I hope that all my students discover that they like yoga, and I hope they all feel comfortable to make the class as easy or as difficult for themselves as they want it to be. I don't really think yoga can be taught, such as English or Math can taught, because yoga encompasses an internal realm; not just an external one. That's why I think that I'm a yoga “guide”, rather than a yoga teacher. I help guide the students to where they want to go, but it's totally up to them if they get there or not. |
